Family Literacy Cont.

In class we saw more presentations on Family literacy. Everyone had such amazing great ideas for family literacy night. Some of the great things I learned that I want to implement in my family literacy is to get volunteers to personally invite people to Family Literacy Night, cute gift-like take-homes for the parents, interactive materials for parents to use at the event and at home, having things for parents and children to do in centers, get donations, have food, have the special areas teachers help. I also learned that there are grants for teachers! That is so awesome, I had no idea that was available! 

The Reader & The Text

After reading chapters 9 and 10 it seems like there is so much that goes into reading comprehension. I thought that the section on prior knowledge was very interesting. I think that this made it clear why during undergrad the professors always wanted a "Activating prior knowledge" category in the lesson plan, because it is very important to the understanding of the lesson. It seems to be the same in reference to reading a selection and makes a lot of sense. The more someone knows about a topic the more they will understand when they read about it. We really need to keep this in mind in the classroom.
